Accomplishing The Perfect Hairstyle

By Amanda Cohen on November 2, 2015

Raise your hand if you have ever experienced heart palpitations while getting a haircut (I know that the majority of people’s hands will shoot right up).

I am always so conflicted when getting haircuts … part of me doesn’t want to experience the skips in my heartbeat from trying a new style, but the other part of me wants to try something dramatically different. Around the time of date parties and special events, my computer history is filled with images of celebrities rocking a specific hairstyle. I always end up thinking to myself, “Why can’t that be me?”

Sometimes I even walk into the salon with a picture of the trendy new look that I want, but I always end up backing out. I am writing this article to guide people, like myself, to hairstyles that will literally look good on everybody, no matter what your head shape is, your hair color, or your hair length.

Ponytails

I am personally a huge fan of the ponytail look; it’s easy to do and can be dressed up or dress down. My ponytail usually involves me just messily pulling my hair out of my face, tying it back, and finishing the look with a Lululemon headband, but this is only for when I work out.

For people rocking straight hair, you could slick back your hair and tie your ponytail centered at the back of your head for a super sleek, professional look. You could finish off this style by leaving two medium-width pieces hanging and tying those pieces around the hairband for an “up-do-esque” allusion. Not only is this look super easy to style, but it is such a beautiful hairdo that highlights the shininess of your hair and accentuates your cheek bones.

For those of you with big, curly hair (like myself), the ponytail look is still very possible. Now, we all know that after our hair air-dries, we cannot brush it or else your little ringlets will turn into a big, frizzy mess, which is why you shouldn’t brush your curly locks at all after they dry.

Instead, brush back the top of your hair so that you do not have fly-aways or bumps and separate the top half of your hair with a big clip. Take the bottom half of your hair and tease the roots, then tie it into a small ponytail. After this, take your top half of hair, brush it back once more, and tie it into a bigger ponytail that hides the bottom ponytail. People might wonder why you would want to make curly hair more voluminous, as it is already on the larger side of life. My response to this is that if you have the big curly hair, you might as well embrace it and flaunt it.

Braids

Braids no longer mean just two curled pigtails down the sides of your face; there are so many different styles to mess around with when it comes to the braiding category. Girls with curly hair, I know that even though we aren’t supposed to, we love to brush our hair to get all of the knots out. The only problem with this is that our hair will officially expand six inches.

However, if you really just can’t resist brushing the knots out, you should do so and then put your hair in either one, a messy French-braid or two, super tight French braids. This also can work for straight-haired girls, but girls with thinner, finer hair usually have better luck with a fishtail braid that starts on one side and curves to the other; it is a super cute look that is both elegant and casual.

Half-up/Half-down

My go-to hairstyle these days (after I take my hair out of a messy ponytail) is the half-up half-down look. More and more girls are opting for the bun as the half-up aspect of the look, rather than the ponytail, and I am one of these girls.

Curly-haired girls know that the bottom half of your hair is the least frizzy, and it’s the upper half that gives us issues. By tying up the upper half in a bun, you get to show off your curls at the bottom of your hair without the fizziness. The best part about this look is that it is meant to be on the messier side (make it look like you weren’t even trying to style your hair).

If you have straight hair, you can definitely make the bun work, but you should really show off your silky locks by tying the upper half into a ponytail instead of a bun. You not only get your hair out of your face, but this is a style that can honestly be dressed up or dressed down, without having to put too much thought into it.

Whether you have pin straight hair or big, curly locks, you can pull off any of these hairstyles. If you don’t know how to style your hair on your own, there’s Google to search videos on how to accommodate these hairstyles. So, grab a hairbrush, some hairspray, hair ties, and a blow dryer and get started!
